The Dream is Living the Dream!

2009 has been a good year for The Dream. First he lands R&B hot chick Christina Milian (is she preggers? I’m not one to gossip but…), great reviews on his second album Love vs. Money, and now The Dream is…a label exec?

Who knew? The Dream, real name (say this 3x fast) Terius Hagert Youngdell Nash, announced via his Twitter that he has been appointed the Executive Vice President of Island Records, and thanked everyone over there at Def Jam for believing that he could take on the job. According to Nash, he “looks forward to the challenge of rebuilding music for not only Island Records, but for Universal Records as a whole.” Seems like he’s taking his new job pretty seriously, as he should be. No word yet on what the singer/songwriter/producer’s first task at hand is for the label, but this should be interesting to watch unfold.

Either way… CONGRATS TO THE DREAM!

Who Is Drake Really Signed To?

drake-lil-wayne

Though only ten of some 3,000 words, one particular sentence in The Fader magazine’s recent Drake cover story is already sparking controversy, but not where most would assume. When questioned about his current label situation, Drake’s clarification that he “don’t fuck with Motown, at all,” has been raising eyebrows, as well as some curtains on windows in the Universal offices.

Billboard is now reporting that unbeknownst to Young Money’s most promising acquisition, his album will indeed be releasing through Motown. Yet with a rumored trillion dollar bidding war for his music, one would wonder why it even matters who’s logo is on the back of the CD iTunes album credit? Apparently, it’s personal.

While The Fader story alludes to Motown president Sylvia Rhone threatening some kind of legal action, sources at the label also told Billboard that bad blood has been brewing for a couple years now, stemming from a meeting Drake had with Rhone when he was still flying under the radar.

Drake, however, has made it very clear that his signing with Universal subsidiary Young Money was a very deliberate display of loyalty for frequent collaborator and kind-of mentor, Lil Wayne. And while Drake’s official album, Thank Me Later, is slated for release before year’s end, his labeless So Far Gone mixtape is doing so far great, already charting three singles on the Billboard charts, including “November 18th,” “I’m Going In” and the breakout hit, “Best I Ever Had.”

Fellas, consider yourself lucky. When a woman passes up a chance to hit the club in that freak’um dress just to cuddle up in one of your forgotten T-shirts (that she kept for moments like these), you’ll have SRC/Universal’s singer/songwriter Shontelle to thank for the trouble. On “T-Shirt,” the lead single from last year’s Shontelligence, the Bajan bombshell gave ladies an anthem for breakup woes, that doesn’t involve keying your car.

The single earned Shontelle an endorsement with Tide, during last fall’s fashion week, plus became one of iTunes’ best pop songs of 2008. Just last night, Veet (the creme-de-la-creme of she-she shaving creams) sponsored Shontelle’s performance at New York’s M2 Ultra Lounge. It was a night of watching women beautify themselves, and not at the expense of men. Shontelle wasn’t mad either, doling out advice for the fellas, plus her thoughts on her title for nicest legs in the music industry.
