?uestlove on the Art of Blending New Music
Renowned audiophile, globe trotting DJ and face of the legendary Roots Crew, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson knows a thing or two about curating. Having held positions as musical director of stage shows far outside of the realm of the best, if not only, band in hip hop, Thompson also melds music new and old in his DJ sets to create a partying experience like no other. Hennessy Artistry was able to sit him down recently to talk about the art of blending music, working with Suite903 favorites like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, and Bilal before their stardom and what new artists he’s looking forward to introducing people to.
Melanie Fiona x ?uestlove Mixtape Collabo
To preview her debut album (dropping in August—too far from now) Toronto powerhourse Melanie Fiona enlisted the help of ?uestlove and The Illadelphonics to release a mixtape filled with live remix acoustic versions of album cuts and covers (jam session style!) along with one on one interviews with The Legendary Roots Crew drummer. The interviews provide great insight into the life, background and making of her late summer release The Bridge. I’m a huge fan of the covers… a reggae twist on Kanye West’s “Heartless” and a great rendition of Sam Cooke’s “Cupid” shows Fiona’s great range and natural talent. The mixtape is a great taste of what she has to come and what fans have to look forward to! Gwan Mel! Tracklist after the jump.
Foreign Exchange & Friends “Purple Flip”
With a new crop of Prince enthusiasts like The-Dream and newcomer Gordon Voidwell making names for themselves, it’s no surprise that people like Foreign Exchange are gathering to pay tribute the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince. “Purple Flip” is the teamwork of the Foreign Exchange, ?uestlove, Zo! and Carlitta Durand. Even with vocals from Phonte and Durand, the track is dripping of “Purple Rain.” But if ?uestlove is on drums, does this make him Sheila E? Or worse yet, who’s Apollonia?
