Suite903 DJ: DJ Spinna

spinna

Suite903: No.5 (Part 1)

DJ Spinna is something of an anomaly in music. A humbling example of what it takes to truly succeed within the framework of multiple fields. A steadfast work ethic, an obsessively extensive vinyl library and the willingness to pursue the full extents of his roots (Funk, Soul and Jazz), foundation (Hip-Hop) and future (Electronic/Dance music) with no restraints. A cornerstone of Hip-Hop’s late 90’s indie-uprise, DJ Spinna made much of his first impression on listeners as the musical background of his group The Jigmastas. Turning heads throughout the industry, Spinna’s sonics soon infiltrated numerous genres. Tapped by everyone from Mary J. Blige to Motown Records (for his brilliant Michael Jackson homage to “We’re Almost There”). It’s here his production presence would flourish greatly, as Spinna would go on to revive and revise Soulful marvels like Donald Byrd, Eddie Kendricks, Betty Carter, Roy Ayers and Al Jarreau. With so much studio work, it’s a marvel Spinna travels as much as he does. The constant, globe-trotting performances he’s become equally famed for have brought the DJ as far as Iceland, Australia, and South Africa as well as countless jaunts through England, Europe and the U.S. Not to forget, his hugely successful tours of Japan, where Spinna is held in the highest regard throughout the country for his craft in music. Its true that there are other likeminded DJ/Producers in the world comparable to DJ Spinna, but for the most part, they choose a genre and master it. Ask them to flip another variety with the same intense knowledge and sleek-savvy and you’ll be hard pressed to find someone that’ll do it to Spinna’s extent.

DJ Cosi

cosi

Cosi gets down not just for the funk of it, but for the love of it. He spins because nothing else is quite as satisfying and that is why New York is proud to claim him as one of its own.. “I play a mix of 70 & 80s R&B classics, funk, 80’s pop, hip-hop, reggae, afro-beat and house music,” Cosi explains. “I have a knack for knowing what people want to hear from just reading the crowd. When I play it, they dance. That’s the best feeling.” The feeling continues, even into his 15th year of spinning, as one of the few DJs who has truly mastered his art. He seamlessly blends several, if not all, of these genres throughout the evening, flawlessly moving the minds and bodies of those in the audience, making him one of the most sought-after DJs in New York City. If you’ve been to one of the myriad parties where Cosi has played, you’d know this experience first hand. Quite simply, his talent touches your soul. Tastemakers at Nike, The Gap, Brooks Brothers, MOMA, Hugo Boss, Timberland, Vibe Magazine, Phat Farm, The Chris Rock Show, Pepsi, The Magic Johnson Foundation, Enyce, Yves Saint Laurent, The National Basketball Players’ Association, The Fader Magazine, the Hudson Hotel, the W Hotel and many others have experienced this first-hand.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, A.Vee is one of the most respected DJs in the scene today. Getting his start back in 1988, A.Vee has been influenced by many of the great pioneers of true DJ’ing. In 1991, A.Vee began his involvement in the battle scene by means of the DMC and Clark Kent DJ competitions, there he developed a reputation from his performances, which naturally translated into show dj’ing. Backing up rap artists like Black Rob, Masta Ace, J-Live, Afu-Ra, Paul Barmen, and many more.

Along with doing various clubs throughout the city and beyond, A.Vee has also developed a following as an on-air radio DJ. Doing guest spots on radio shows from coast to coast. At the same time A.Vee has created a following in the mixtape market with a series of underground hip-hop compositions.

In the summer of 99, A.Vee took part in the Sugar Ray & Goo Goo Dolls Tour, which was sponsored by Levis Silver Tab. For over twenty cities, A.Vee performed for the concertgoers at the Levis Silver Tab Tent located at the various venues.

In the year 2000, A.Vee performed in Lincoln Centers Summer Festival 2000. There, a piece written in 1951 by modern classical composer John Cage called Imaginary Landscape was performed by a DJ quartet. A.Vee, Christan Marclay (Medeski Martin & Wood), Kuttin Kandi (5th platoon), and Frankie Inglese (Soul Kitchen, BeavHer) performed the piece that was written for the turntable. The method of creating the piece was done by playing 42 different records and splicing them together. That was the first time it’s ever been performed on the instrument it was created for.

Also from time to time, A.Vee takes part in the Cornerstone Promotions 1200 Squad Mix CD series. Cornerstone Promotions, a marketing company, developed a series of monthly compositions recorded on to CD featuring some of the latest Hip Hop and R&B songs to hit the retail market. These compositions are compiled by some of the most influential DJs from across the country, and distributed to thousands of industry tastemakers worldwide. Sharing the honor with DJs like Stretch Armstrong, Revolution, DJ Muggs, & Premier, A.Vee s composition can be heard on Volume #22 & #40 of their Hip-Hop series, and also Volume #1 of the Suite 903 R&B series. The composition #40 was collaboration with legendary Philadelphia icon and good friend DJ Jazzy Jeff.

In 2001 A.Vee had a few vinyl releases under his belt. Collaborating with MC El da Sensei, formally of the Artifacts, A.Vee and his production partner DJ 3D had a release on Up Above Entertainment/Manhattan Records. The production team knows as THE COURTS, also has tracks featured on Masta Ace’s Disposable Arts, Wordsworth’s Mirror Music. During that same year, A.Vee also acquired an A&R position for Sequence Records. This label is owned and operated by Patrick Moxey, who managed the careers of Gang Starr for many years. There, A.Vee coordinated several of the releases from Sequence Records like Dan the Automator’s Wanna Buy A Monkey, and DJ Babu’s Duck Season.

In 2002, DJ A.Vee’s scratches were featured on the critically acclaimed release by DJ Jazzy Jeff’s “The Magnificent” album released on BBE records.

In 2004, DJ A.Vee was commissioned by Ecko Unlimited Clothing to score the music for their fashion show walk presented on The VIBE Magazine Award show, which aired on nation television. That same year, the video game giant ROCKSTAR Games commissioned A.Vee & his partner DJ 3D to partake in the music production end of their webpage. The project was known as BEATERATOR (www.beaterator.com). This site was an online opportunity for up and coming producer to learn from those who are actually in the industry making the music they love & enjoy.

Currently, A.Vee can be seen touring the globe DJ’ing various clubs and venues headlining or collaborating with longtime colleagues Prince Paul or DJ Jazzy Jeff. In September of 2006, A.Vee maintained a six-week residency at Club BonBon in Shanghai Chain. Choice defines the man. Rich Medina has made a life based on one choice that has transformed the listening experience of millions. DJ Rich Medina lives, breathes, and revels in sharing the type of music that make a listener remember his soul. It is this awareness of soul that brings listeners back time and again to hear Rich spin: heads nod, bodies sway, emotions expand and coalesce. DJ Rich Medina uses the decks to guide his people away from the ordinary and into the realm of their imaginations. His intelligent blends bridge unexpected song selections that build a collective consciousness of intoxication. Without even realizing it, DJ Rich Medina lures you in and makes you forget who you were before the music began – Medina spins you into the now, into the moment, into the vital essence of who you are. Medina credits his family’s Baptist faith as the groundwork and source of his musical inclination and intuition. Music was always a form of celebration and rejoicing. The first time Medina heard Diana Ross’s 1976 hit “Love Hangover” in the family living room, he knew he wanted to be a DJ. When he’s writing music, whether in collaboration with other musicians or a personal project, Medina always aims to inject a universal notion of the need for change. Rich Medina holds DJ residencies at prominent venues throughout the country. Most notably he is a defining DJ at his “Little Ricky’s Rib Shack” parties at APT in New York City. Every Wednesday night Rich draws a crowd that waits patiently in line to experience the Medina funk flow, and for the last decade Medina has been a fixture on the Philly nightlife scene. Saturday nights on a bi-weekly basis, DJ Rich Medina is host of Jump N Funk at the prestigious Martinez Gallery. It is through such residencies that DJ Rich Medina is able to cultivate his audience and hone his craft. Always evolving as an artist, DJ Rich Medina transitions into the role of pre-eminent spoken word artist at clubs the world over. Rich writes words that convey messages of change and agency, self-determination and hope, and he is also the embodiment of those very same qualities and emotions. DJ Rich Medina, renaissance man, articulate performer and a down and dirty DJ who can go head to head with the best, is an artist who will transform the average experience of any club or venue and give his audience a night of music and words to remember.

Suite903 DJ: Ge-ology

phpispfhqpm

Suite903: No.15

Back in the late 80’s under the name “DJ Plainterror”, GE-OLOGY was once the DJ/producer of a four member group “Born Busy” including high school friend, the legendary Tupac Shakur “MC New York”… uniquely cementing him historically as the only producer privileged to record Pac’s very first and earliest recordings. And in the early 90’s he co-founded the infamous “Dooable Arts” with Matt Reid aka “Matt Doo”, through which he first made his mark. Since then he’s become synonymously known for album cover art, T-shirt graphics, magazine illustrations and collaborative mural paintings with his fellow Barnstormers crew (a famed artist collective created by Davd Ellis aka SKWERM), as much as he’s known for producing tracks with the likes of Mos Def, Vinia Mojica, Talib Kweli, Sadat X, Pharoahe Monch, Jem, Mystic or his remixes for Pete Rock & Grand Agent. Boasting international acclaim, one of his most recognized paintings is the Rawkus classic “Body Rock” cover featuring Mos Def, Q-Tip and Tash from Tha Alkaholiks (featured in Andrew Emery’s “The Book of Hip Hop Cover Art” and listed at #3 in “EgoTrip’s Book of Rap List” 25 Great EP, 12″ & CD Single Covers section).

But to truly understand GE-OLOGY, one must not underestimate his influence, depth and versatility. Embracing the sacred principles and wisdom of great masters yet challenging convention with youthful rebellion, GE-OLOGY’s instinctual balance is somewhat of an anomaly in today’s clone driven mass-produced digitized society. His recognizable identity through sound, vision and consistency hasn’t gone unnoticed, thus resulting in a steady stream of exposure in numerous magazines such as XLR8R, The Fader, Frank 151, Style and Urb; cable network staple MTV News “You Hear It First”; and creative involvement in projects with international corporate giants such as Sweden’s Hennes & Mauritz (H&M stores) and the prestigious French cognac maker Hennessy. Though creatively venturing from the street level to infiltrating the creative commercial world, GE-OLOGY has never wavered from keeping his craft responsibly honest to the delight of longtime supporters… always maintaining his creative integrity. As evident in the barrage of fan mail from his international core audience, GE-OLOGY continues to open eyes… and this is only the beginning.
