Video: Ne-Yo, ” Beautiful Monster” and “Champagne Life”

Ne-Yo is apparently taking the vintage approach to video—making this double effort scream Michael Jackson. From the almost ten minute-long plot-laden videos, to the party dance scenes, to Ne-Yo’s own white socks, all of this comes as no surprise since Ne-Yo penned quite a few jams for the late King of Pop. “Champagne Life” definitely sounds like something MJ would have sung himself. Both songs are complete opposites of each other, but we do notice and we’re certain the styling and themes aren’t accidental. Not too sure how we feel about the actual story line either but we have yet to stop enjoying some good mega-posse dancing. Check out the 2-part mini-movie for yourself.

Ne-Yo, “Champagne Life” MP3

If you ever wondered how Ne-Yo got that job writing for the late great MJ than this song should certainly prove it to you. Expect to hear this at every wedding and barbecue for the rest of the summer. Also make sure you practice your BEST Chicago two-step because this is not for amateurs and there will be no grinding allowed. Grown and sexy—think Obama and Mobama’s first dance. Remember it’s all in the shoulders, slight bounce and stay on your toes. If you wear towering platforms everywhere you should be fine. Songs like this are Ne-Yo’s forte and we hope that his new album Libra Scale is full of bright, dance jams such as this one. You will also probably catch momdukes and your auntie bumping this in their cars all day, so if you have issues with that beware. We would like to note though that the clap Ne-Yo is claiming in this one is really just the “no music” clap (golfclap remix). Is golf more sexy these days? Haha you’re right, we walked right into that one!

Ne-Yo’s name is finally starting to make sense. Yeah, we got the Neo from The Matrix thread, still it seemed like something that made more sense to him than it did to us. But if his goal is to create believers in his talent, then paint us Morpheus. Where he really cranked up the tempo for “Closer,” he pushes the envelope even further. It sounds like Stargate flipped a sample from Darude’s “Sandstorm” for “Beautiful Monster” for his next project on Def Jam called Libra Scale. He’s really gonna be the king of the beach this summer, Jersey Shore that is with this one.

Video: Rick Ross f. Ne-Yo, “Super High”

If the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, then food and liquor are the best pieces to a great Rick Ross video. The delicious spread in the video for “Mafia Music” could have made the knees buckle on a diligent hunger striker. As for the amount of Ciroc being passed around in the F. Gary Gray produced visual to “Super High,” let’s just say the BAWSE will never catch cotton mouth. Obligatory sponsorship from Diddy’s vodka aside, the beat served by DJ Clark Kent and The Remedy is so good you can actually taste the Rosé RAWSE screams for throughout his lead single from Teflon Don. 50 Cent f. Ne-Yo, “Baby By Me”

50 Cent the family man? A hard sell for sure, but probably not quite as surreal you’d think. He gave up drugs and alcohol long ago, saying they impede his ability to stay focused on making money and club appearances are rare, as lucrative as they’d probably be. In this video, however, 50 lives out a fantastic normalcy including a marriage to Kelly Rowland from Destiny’s Child and three little 50’s (nickels?) running around their yard. In the end though, it was all a dream.

Rihanna, “Russian Roulette”

After last week’s cryptic tweet-peek about the new Rihanna album we finally getting a first listen (and right in the middle of a Gucci Mane binge). The new single “Russian Roulette” is written by pop genius Ne-Yo but Rihanna’s passioned whine doesn’t exactly hold water. Also weird is that they chose a ballad to be released as the first single, setting the mood for a somber, depressing, reflective (read: yawn-inducing) album or maybe I’m just hating because I wanted to hear RiRi go ham? Or Maybe she was influenced by her new bestie Kanye’s foray into all things depressed. Either way lets hope its not as predictable as that gunshot at the end of the song.—Judnick Mayard
