DJ Parler Displays Nina Simone’s Samplology
Born in Canada, raised in Maryland and residing in NYC, DJ Parler is no rookie: his well-downloaded mixtape series Samplology act as a comprehensive document of newer music and the original songs that inspired them, with each chapter highlights a select artist, producer or genre, spanning artists from Kanye West to Isaac Hayes, Biggie to Dilla. This week, in the latest chapter of Samplology, the late great Nina Simone gets the treatment. You’ll be surprised at the tracklist—I mean, we all know Simone was sampled for Talib Kweli’s “Get By” and Common’s “Misunderstood.” But… G-Unit?!… Sampled Nina?! You have to hear it to believe it. D. Woods’ No-Diddy Bop
D. Woods has taken it upon herself to pave her own way since splitting with Danity Kane, and luckily her way does not include Playboy or “train” music. Her future does, however, include a mixtape! Teaming up with Tapemasters Inc., D Woods just released Independence Day, mixed by DJ Nabs, and included remixes to Jamie Foxx’ “Blame It,” Lenny Kravitz’ “Go My Way” (of course, with her shout out on Young Moneys’ “Every Girl,” she had to go there too). Don’t miss her dope rendition of the George Michael (yes, George Michael) track “Father Figure.” The mix is fun, but one song I haven’t been able to bring myself to listen to yet is “Follow Me (The Twitter Song)”—has it really gone there? At least there aren’t any Diddy ad-libs… no “Take that, Take that”s.

Q-Tip, Raphael Saadiq & D’Angelo are Lynwood Rose
Q-Tip, Raphael Saadiq & D’Angelo together on a mixtape—what is this, the Super Friends? Think Differently Music Group releases Lynwood Rose (The mixtape’s title? A made-up name for the trio? Lucy Peal’s play cousin?) at a time when all three superstars have kind of been coasting since their last projects, one, a bit more than others. The wishful thinking of a D’Angelo comeback aside, the mixtape is filled with previously released favorites from each artist as well as collabs between them. Check out the tracklist and download after the jump.
