Video: Erykah Badu Is Dolled Up In Her Window Seat

Technically it takes Erykah Badu 4 minutes and 20 seconds to do her makeup. The other 32 seconds of Ms. Erykah’s teaser is saved for mugging in the mirror, and a few funny faces (no fuck faces, sorry guys). Is she trying to send a message through “Window Seat”? She will grant fans intimate access to the treasured moment of beautification. Clearly vanity doesn’t kill. Erykah puts on her best. Now only if Vanity 6 could have got the memo back in the day for “Make Up.” See the video below.

Video: Erykah Badu, “Window Seat” Live on Fallon
Earlier we were actually thinking we would CUT A CHICK (angsty Thursdays), but then we remembered the quasi-mantra we copped from Erykah on our favorite album of hers, Worldwide Underground, drank a little water and tried a little yoga. And watching her do “Window Seat” with the Roots as her backing band inspired us to sit the hell back down and breathe. This woman is the best. Also is she wearing a LEOTARD?! WORD UP.
Video: Erykah Badu Live at the All-Star Game
Between Usher waging war with PETA, Alicia Keys looking like an 8th grader at the zoo and Shakira leaving us with no comment, the performances at the All-Star game were a tragedy. However, there is always a silver lining, and Erykah Badu was it. Ms Loretta Brown showed up lookin like that hot British nanny ya mama never let your daddy hire and set things in order. (Just kidding, we had au pairs!) She performed a cover of “You’ve got a Friend” with just a keyboard player, Suite903 homie Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner (with the stunna shades on!) on upright bass and a trio of singers—once again proving that sometimes less is more. It was probably the best moment of the whole weekend, including that yawntastic Dunk contest, because everyone loves some Badu. Even the groupies get down with Loretta Brown…well…not like that. She’s back and the rest of you folks should get your game up. — Judnick Mayard
Video: Erykah Badu f. Lil Wayne, “Jump Up in the Air (And Stay There)”
Not going to lie, the beginning of this video is not for those with weak stomachs. Four interlocking Erykah Badu faces are just very intense. Especially when her eight eyes are peering into your soul on the Monday morning after Valentine’s Day weekend. Listen Erykah we did some things we’re not proud of but you can’t judge us like this!!! (Just kidding, we spent the weekend watching the Olympics and wishing we could win a gold medal; forget flowers!) Anyway, we don’t know how strong the “Free Weezy” campaign is but Miss Badu is obviously on it and maybe secretly so are we? Who knows but we definitely want more of these two in our lives. –Judnick Mayard
Erykah Badu, “Window Seat” MP3

Nobody was as disappointed as we were when we found out that Erykah Badu’s new album New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh was pushed back to March 30th, 2010. Why can’t they let us live?! Luckily the first single is now released and we can satisfy ourselves with tidbits til the big day. “Window Seat” is what Erykah has always done best: sing the stress away. We’re ready to crack open a bottle of wine, light some candles and tell everyone to back the hell up. With other Suite903 favorites ?uestlove (on drums) and Stephen ‘Thundercat” Bruner (on bass), this song is just repeating what we already told you months ago: ERYKAH GOT THIS! So get yourself ready to be in a better mood all spring long. -Judnick Mayard

Erykah Badu f. Bilal & Lil Wayne, “Jump in the Air (And Stay There)” MP3

HEY GUYS, ERYKAH GOT LIL WAYNE ON THIS SONG! HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW!
This is the first official leak from Erykah Badu’s forthcoming album, New Amerykah Pt. II: Return of the Ankh, the sequel to her incredible New Amerykah. Can’t wait to see what she does with the videos for these, considering the last album’s visual creativity (see: the excellent “Honey“).

CYRIOUSLY: Love Vs. Heartbreak

Welcome back and to some of errryone who never left, sorry for the lack of updates during the holiday rush!
Yes, 2010 is here and now that a(nother) decade is long and gone, it is time for me to come clean about something which has overtaken my mind, body and soul like Pier 1 CDs. (Come on, I can’t be ‘that’ alone on the reference, chea?)
Kanye West’s 808s & Heartbreak” < Andre 3000’s The Love Below
Sure, you could use the argument of time difference or maybe even keep on reading a few more lines to see what I’m really sayi here, but it’s quite simple and plain….Kanye straight JACKED Andre 3000’s dopest concept to date.
Recap: We Heard Erykah Badu’s New Album Last Night

Last night we entered exactly what the Suite903 HQ looks like in our dreams: a small room with pillows, soft couches, dim lights, candles lit and a bar in the back. The reality was a little better than the dream, an intimate album listening for Erykah Badu’s newest record New Amerykah Part 2: Return of the Ankh. After having our phones confiscated (thanks to a disrespectful song leak that morning), we were left in the room to wait for Ms. Badu, who was running late with a sick child. By the time she arrived many folks were two seconds from going into catatonic shock, being unable to Twitter for 35 minutes. She joked about it as she entered, wearing the DOPEST AND LARGEST FURRY HAT WE HAVE EVER SEEN. (Think Andre Agassi’s blonde weave mullet, but made of fur). Not to mention her latex leggings, purple patent leather pumps and a body-hugging down coat complete with tutu skirt and a boatneck (Chrismukkwanzaa wishlist!). After imploring us to “enjoy the refreshments and white women provided,” she lied down right next to us on the floor and we all vibed to her sounds together. Needless to say, the new album is beyond amazing. She described Part 1 as the left brain—“analytical, socio-political commentary”—whereas Part 2 is the right brain, emotional and sensual. As usual, Erykah tells an honest love story her own way using everything from pianos and live harps to Biggie references and her signature raspy wails. Don’t expect any “Call Tyrone”; this is an evolved look at all the angles of all types of love: obsessive, imagined, unrequited. In the end she sat and answered questions: everything from whether there will be an official tour (YES!) to which baby daddy she thought was the best rapper (we’ll keep that one to ourselves). The pivotal moment came when she told an anecdote of something her son Seven had once said to her, bringing herself to tears. As she put her head in her hands and remained in silence, one of the fiercest women on wax became, in that moment of vulnerability, a human and a living testament to how much her life has changed in becoming a mother, which made a stronger point than anything she’s recorded in the past decade. Valentine’s Day will surely bring many gifts and false promises of everlasting affection but we’re anxiously waiting for the 23rd of February when a real love story can be told.—Judnick Mayard
Video: Shafiq Huseyn f. Fatima & Thundercat, “Lil Girl”
Recent Suite903 TV videostar Shafiq just dropped this sweet video for “Lil Girl” and is giving us serious MJ/”Black or White” vibes without the creepy face morphing. Check the Badu cameo with the great eye make-up. Do you feel weirdly better about life after watching this or is it just us? Shafiq, big ups to you and your feel-good vibes!
Suite903 TV: Shafiq and Thundercat Mellow Out

Sa-Ra’s production mastermind Shafiq Husayn, and his dude celebrity bass player Thundercat (of Sa-Ra and Erykah Badu fame) stopped by Suite903 to fill us in on what makes up their magical beat elixir, and Shafiq’s deep new record.
